What Is The 60 30 10 Decorating Rule?

There is never a definitive right or wrong answer when it comes to interior design, and for people like me who know this, having no rules or guidelines to follow can be frustrating.

If you are interested in decoration or interior design, you probably already know the 60 / 30 / 10 color rule, which helps you balance the colors in your home or office. Not only is it a great rule to know, but it can also help you peel off room colors. It is important to remember, however, that this is not a precise formula.

You can imagine it as a guide to experiment with a palette of 3 colors. Experiment with different shades until you find a 40: 30: 10 or 10: 10 ratio and see what comes with it, but color balance is not an exact science. If you want a lighter color, use it and keep the rest of the neutral tones.

The application of colours according to the 60 / 30 / 10 rule ensures balance and depth to create a coherent composition in your room. Colours can be used on furniture, curtains, carpets, bedding, accents and walls. They are necessary to enliven a room and to stimulate interest, so use your preferred light tones to make a neutral palette more vibrant, and go for neutrals and pastels to make bright tones quieter.

If you want to choose colors that highlight other colors, you can choose 30 / 10. This way, your room will not be overwhelmed if you have the colors you are looking for.

If an abundance of colors is not your style, there is another trick for interior design that you can ask your designer. Add additional colors and textures, and if you want a peaceful and soothing look, you can also request a monochrome color scheme.

If you follow the 60 / 30 / 10 rule, colors have nothing to do with each other if you use different shades of the same color. When creating a monochromatic color scheme, the main, secondary and accent colors can vary the shades of the same color, not three separate colors.

Neutral and monochrome colour schemes create a relaxing colour scheme. Cool colors work well in bedrooms and offices where quiet energy is appreciated. A neutral greige is reassuring when your 60 percent main color is a deep hue, stunning when your 30 percent secondary color is your greige’s pale hue, and lightens the scheme with your 10 percent accent color.

You can imagine them as accent colours, but you use many neutrals to balance them out and give the eyes a place to rest. Another colour rule for interior designers is to use a complementary colour scheme, which I think is the simplest. In particular, complementary color schemes use two shades that sit beside each other on the color wheel which means that you get combinations of blue, orange, yellow, violet, red and green (as you can see in the photo above) and their high contrast mean that they bring a strong energy into the room even when used in small doses.

Your secondary colours should occupy about 30 per cent of your room and be similar to your majority colours. You can choose a cream or white for your room, but soft yellows, blues and greens can also be used as secondary colours.

The 60 colours in one room serve to dominate and anchor the room. In a family room, the 60 colours represent the wall colours of large pieces of decoration such as carpets, cases, large pieces of furniture, sofas, etc. The 30 represent the secondary colors in the room that influence the presence of the main colors that you have selected for the room.

If you squint your eyes when entering a room, 60% of the main color is the predominant color you will see. This can include things like your walls, your sofa, the main colours of your carpets, your cupboards and tiles (we are talking about kitchen and bathroom). The 30% of secondary colours include things like accents on chairs, bedding, curtains, accents on walls, paint on doors and furniture.

Your dominant color will serve as paint for your walls, and your accent color will appear on throws, cushions, and artworks. This means that most walls are painted in the colour of a large sofa or carpet. The middle color will be the dominant color, and the color on the page will become the secondary or accent color.

The best way to plan your room is to select your favorite color and use it as the accent color, but not as the major color. People want their favorite color to be their majority color all the time, especially if it’s a bright, loud color that makes the room scream.

In this way, you can let your favorite color represent everything else while maintaining a balance of colors in your room. The use of the 60 / 30 / 10 rule makes color selection easy and helps you achieve a balance when decorating.

Simply put, the decoration rule allows you to create a balanced color scheme. Choosing three colors for your room and a color scheme based on the color wheel is an easy method. For more instructions, see our feature on how to use a color wheel to select additions, shades and tones.

The 60 / 30 / 10 color rule is more a trick of the interior designers than an actual rule. You can use it as a guide, but you don’t have to specify its proportions. This rule should be broken, but there are ways to break it and still achieve a balanced and beautiful interior design.

Addition of colour to your home can be daunting, especially if you want to introduce a new palette or make a bold statement. By using the 60 / 30 / 10 rule to decorate, you can bring color into a room with confidence. A balanced design looks like this : 60 percent of a room is a color (primitive color), 30 percent complementary colors (secondary colors) and 10 percent accent colors.
